One of the quiet luxuries of staying at Porters is having everything on your doorstep. We sit right in the heart of Havelock North village, where some of Hawke’s Bay’s best loved restaurants, cafes and wine lounges are all within an easy stroll. Step outside and you can be tasting estate wine, sharing tapas or sitting down to dinner within minutes, no car required. Here are a few of the neighbours we happily send our guests to.

You barely have to leave home for this one. Tucked into the courtyard directly behind Porters, Smith & Sheth is home to the CRU Cellar Door, Wine Lounge and the immersive Smith & Sheth Wine Studio. Settle in for a glass, a guided flight, or a sommelier-led tasting that journeys through the wines of Hawke’s Bay and beyond. Walking time: under a minute, in the courtyard behind the hotel.

A family-run favourite in the centre of the village, Maina is the place for an unhurried breakfast, excellent coffee and a counter piled high with fresh baking. Simple, honest food done well, from morning through lunch. Walking time: around 2 minutes.
A village institution for all-day grazing, Deliciosa brings a little south of Spain to Havelock North, with Mediterranean-style tapas, a deep local and international wine list, and a candlelit covered courtyard. Made for long, lazy afternoons of shared plates. Walking time: around 3 minutes.

A relaxed neighbourhood restaurant from the team at Craggy Range, Mary’s pairs bistro classics and nostalgic favourites with a lively list of cocktails and, of course, Craggy Range wine. Warm, generous and easy to love, whether for a glass after work or a long dinner. Walking time: around 3 minutes.
Hawke’s Bay’s only izakaya-style Japanese restaurant, Piku serves beautiful sharing plates alongside a seriously good cocktail list. Book ahead for the dining room, or take your chances in the bar or out in the courtyard. Walking time: around 3 minutes.

A local institution on the Joll Road dining lane, Alessandro’s turns out wood-fired Neapolitan pizza and classic pasta that taste like Italy. Authentic, generous and always busy, so it pays to book ahead. Walking time: around 4 minutes.
At the end of the lane, Mijita brings punchy, zingy Latin American flavours to the village. Think tacos, ceviche, house-made sauces and some of the best margaritas in the Bay, all designed to share. Walking time: around 4 minutes.
